Analysis

Over time, searches for Pizza hut have decreased in frequency, while searches for Chipotle have greatly increased in frequency. This could indicate that Chipotle has seen growth in popularity over time, which could foreshadow a large impact on American culture. Meanwhile, Pizza Hut may have seen a decrease in relevance as indicated by the decrease in frequency. This could indicate that Pizza Hut is fading in popularity.

Report

The research question was to consider how the prominence of “Pizza Hut” and “Chipotle” has changed over time and what this might suggest about their impact on American culture. Data was collected by analyzing the frequency of “pizza hut” and “chipotle” searches, respectively, on the Corpus of Contemporary American English.

Data for Pizza Hut search frequency

Data for Chipotle search frequency

As seen by the first graph, Pizza Hut has seen a decrease in frequency over time. This could indicate that Pizza hut is declining in relevance, which means that Pizza Huts around America may face closures in the future.

As seen on the second graph, Chipotle has seen a notable increase in frequency. This may show that Chipotle is increasing in relevance, which may foreshadow more Chipotles opening in America.

These statistics may also imply a change in preference of food in America. Perhaps Americans are beginning to favor burritos over pizza, or perhaps this is a result of changes in pricing over time.
